PeopleSearchDigest.com - EonsThink social networking is just for kids? That’s probably because most of the more popular platforms like MySpace and Facebook are generally geared for a younger crowd. Fortunately, there are now social networks specifically designed for the baby boomer generation. Unfortunately, the creators of the sites are generally not old enough to be in the age demographic.

Take Eons for example, since it’s in the news right now. Launched July of 2006, Eons is a social network with an over 50’s focus. It is best described in Eons’ tagline, “Lovin’ life on the flip side of 50.” It’s an online network focused on travel, the reinvention of careers, building/maintaining relationships, giving back to the community, and basically living life to the fullest.

Another Eons saying is, “live to be 100, or die trying.” The site is broken down into categories like, people (groups, members, and blogs), fun, love, money, body, life paths, “obits” (obituaries), games and travel. There’s a lot to the site and should provide something for everyone…over 50. However, the obituaries section seems a little distasteful - not to mention strange as the site is supposedly promoting longevity.

Speaking of longevity, good news for the lifespan of the site was the major overhaul that began last Monday, September 10th. Eons’s CEO Jeff Taylor announced the layoff of twenty-four employees, and the “voluntary” departure of twelve other staff members. Apparently Sequoia Capital and Central Catalyst, who have invested $32 million in Eons in two rounds are said to have demanded the restructuring. They recognized that they were overstaffed, had too many projects going, and were generally taking on too much. The company was in much need of a down-size and can now work on refocusing the site and promoting what works about it. Thankfully, the obituaries are leaving with the staff.

With the longevity revolution, the 50+ generation has the potential to live nearly 20 years more than their grandparents did. What does this mean? It’s time to get online and join a social network, whether you have kids, grandkids, or are a kid at heart.

I can’t believe they even made a social networking site for people over 50. I mean, I’m over 50, and still can’t believe it.
